Caring For Your Lawn in Winter
Texas has gotten more wintry weather in recent years, which means that learning to take care of your lawn during snow and cold temperatures is vitally important. Good lawn care during the fall and winter can help ensure that your grass grows well in the spring and summer. As your Texas lawn-care equipment dealer, J5 Tractors has the tips you need to properly care for your lawn over the winter.
1. Keep Your Yard Aerated
When frost sets in on your lawn, the very top layer can form a seal over the soil underneath, which stifles growth by preventing fresh air from penetrating deeper below the surface of your yard. Take some time on a warm day to aerate the soil thoroughly to ensure that it gets plenty of air.
2. Reduce Foot Traffic
Allowing people to trample the same paths back and forth across your yard will eventually create bald patches. This is true even if the lawn is covered in snow. Make sure that you vary your walking paths to prevent damage and try to reduce foot traffic in general.
3. Clear Away Debris
Piles of dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks, twigs and dead organic matter can all contribute to stifling your grass, especially with a layer of snow on top of everything. Take some time to clear away debris before the cold hits and remove any heavy objects like the kids’ bikes, sports equipment or other stuff that may have been left behind at the end of summer.
4. Be Careful With Salt
In order to clear away ice and slick patches on driveways and sidewalks, people typically use rock salt to melt everything down. However, as you may know, salt can kill your plants and that includes the grass. When applying salt, try to be careful about how you apply it and don’t use too much, as the melting ice can leach salt into your yard.
5. Prune Plants
Winter is also a good time to prune bushes and trees on your property, as there won’t be a lot of leaves in your way. Use some pruning shears to clip away dead or languishing portions of your plants so that they can truly flourish come the springtime.
