There are many different factors you have to take into consideration when buying a new tractor. One of the most important factors is the size of tractor that will be most suitable for your work and your property. You don’t want to get a tractor that’s so large that it becomes cumbersome, nor do you want a tractor that is too compact and lightweight to use with your attachments and trailers.

J5 Tractors, with locations in Conroe, Navasota, Buna and Normangee, is your Texas tractor dealer. As such, we’ve provided you with this helpful information on what to look for when shopping for a new tractor by size.

How Does Sizing Work?

In the world of tractors, the machine is usually categorized according to the horsepower of its engine. However, this categorization may vary widely depending on the manufacturer. Some manufacturers might consider their tractors to be “sub-compact,” while another might label a tractor with the same horsepower as “compact.” Always check the model’s specifications to determine the strength of tractor you’re getting.

Sub-Compact Tractors

Any tractor that comes in under 25 hp is typically considered to be sub-compact. With their small size and heightened maneuverability, sub-compact tractors are excellent for working on small and cramped properties with a lot of obstacles. Sub-compact tractors are also inexpensive, which makes them extremely budget-friendly.

The drawback with a sub-compact tractor is that they aren’t typically strong enough to use certain types of attachments, so if you need more power, you’ll have to size up.

Sub-compact tractor weights may fall between 500 and 1,200 pounds, with rear wheels of less than 30” in diameter and a machine width under 48”.

Compact Tractors

The next category of tractor falls between 25 and 60 hp and is called “compact.” Most farming operations can get a lot of usage out of a compact tractor, as they’re pretty maneuverable with enhanced attachment possibilities. PTO and enclosed cabs are typical features on utility tractors.

Compact tractors weight anywhere between 1,500 and 6,000 pounds, depending on whether they have an enclosed cab or not. Rear wheel diameters fall between 30” and 36”, while the width of a compact tractor is anywhere from 42” to 54”.

Utility Tractors

Finally, you have tractors that fall between 60 and 140 hp, which are considered to be “utility” tractors. Many large commercial agricultural operations use utility tractors because of their sheer strength and capabilities. While not as easy to maneuver around tight areas, that’s generally not necessary on the massive swathes of land that employ these tractors most.

Utility tractors weigh anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 pounds, with rear wheel diameters of anywhere from 36” to 60” and a tractor width of 54” to 72”.
